Modern saturation plugins primarily focus on diode (even), triode (odd), and pentode (both) harmonic patterns, are often applied on a linear slope, and are almost exclusively based on multiples of a perceived fundamental. To assist composers in their audio editing and to widen the applications of saturation, I'm building a VST3/AU saturation plugin in Max MSP's RNBO that uses the average harmonic magnitude of specific acoustic instruments as discrete models for saturation applications. I plan to create models for all woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion, and vocals. The plugin will also come with options for harmonic-specific soft-clipping, customizable drive settings, and a vector plane crossing the three common harmonic settings, discrete instrument models, and equal/just temperament systems.
